FRONT COVER: End of an Era, by Richard Whitney, 1974, oil, 20 x 30. Private collection.
FEATURES:
DAVID KREITZER: MEDITATIONS IN WATERCOLOR by Diane Casella Hines. This Californian's approach to watercolor is atypical: he uses watercolor as an additive medium (building up layers of colors), rather than as a reductive one. For Kreitzer, the act of painting is a form of meditation; he believes that his inner life is recorded in his works, some of which are shown.
DALE DEARMOND: LEGENDS IN WOODCUTS by Barbara Whipple. This artist's love of Alaska and its unique history is evident in her colorful woodcuts, which are often based on Alaskan myths. Here DeArmond discusses her career and her techniques.
A CONVERSATION WITH RICHARD WHITNEY by Charles Movalli. This New Hampshire portraitist and landscapist has won many awards for his oils. A former student of the late R. H. Ives Gammell, Whitney discusses representational art today and his own approach to his work.
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: RHEA RHODES. In New Mexico, Rhodes creates bold, spontaneous statements of her subject matter, using vibrant colors. Here she describes her creative process.
JOHN AXTON by Mary Carroll Nelson. Color sets the mood in the oil paintings and lithographs of this New Mexico artist. Here Axton discusses his interest in the Southwest and the American Indian, as well as his techniques and his symbolic treatment of his subjects.
MATTING FRAMING by Herb Carithers. The author, a marketing consultant forthe Professional and Commercial Products Department of 3M and the originator of the Oval-Master mat cutter, discusses creative matting--how to select a colored mat.
WOOD ENGRAVINGS BY BARRY MOSER by Eunice Agar. This nationally known wood engraver and cofounder of the Pennyroyal Press in Massachusetts has illustrated 59 books, among them the Inferno, Purgatorio, and Moby-Dick. Many of his prints, which evince a subtle beauty as well as an authenticity of detail, are reproduced in this article.
