Item description
ABOUT THIS BOOK: Preface - This interesting pictorial history will help readers understand and appreciate the contributions of some of the pioneers in aerial fire detection and sup-pression. Thanks to the foresight of many individuals, starting in the 1930s, the Forest Service began efforts that changed aerial fire control throughout the world. Many of the Forest Service innovations introduced during this period were adapted by the military and the governments of many nations. As this book clearly illustrates, the use of smoke-jumpers has had a major impact on reducing losses from forest fires. Since the first parachute jumps by Forest Service smokejumpers more than 40 years ago, this unique approach to fire suppression has saved millions of acres from the ravages of fire. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management smokejumpers are an elite group. They have established very high performance and safety standards that reflect credit on both themselves and their agencies. The accomplishments of these men and women have directly contributed to sports parachuting, rescue parachuting, steerable parachutes, and the widespread use of the static line. Stan Cohen and the Pictorial Histories Publishing Company are to be commended for their work in writing and publishing this fascinating look at the history of smokejumping. The photos and their accompanying text bring to life the rich heritage of the smokejumpers.
R. MAX PETERSON, Chief Forest Service-USDA
