Red Pinecone Ginger / Shampoo Ginger / Zingiber zerumbet 5 Mature Rhizomes! A unique tropical looking perennial (hardy from zones 8 to 11, though some sources state zone 7) with a pinecone shaped red bloom. Plant will grow in height from 4 to 7 feet and spread in width to 3 feet wide. Blooms emerge in late spring, maturing in summer to a bright red and remain red until the plant goes dormant in the late fall. This ginger is also called a “Shampoo Ginger” as the sap from the bloom can be used as a hair shampoo and conditioner. While I have not used it myself, I give my neighbor the blooms and she swears by it’s hair conditioning properties – she freezes the sap for the times of year when it is not available fresh. The rhizomes will be shipped bare root and moisture packed for shipment.
