This is a 1987 United Way Commemorative Stamp First Day Cover with a denomination of 22 cents. It was issued in April 28, 1987 and timed with the observance of Volunteer Week, April 26th - May 2nd.
The First Day of Issue sheets gives a brief history behind the stamp, its design and the commemoration of the United Way's historic mission of fundraising and evolvement to a critical volunteer-driven resource for communities and citizens across the country.
Designed by Jerry Pinkney of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, the stamp features six horizontal bands of color which approximate the shades of a rainbow and reflect the motif of the United Way logo. Below are six overlapping people of various ages and races, representing the diversity of people contributing to and benefiting from volunteer services.
