The Battle of Wilson's Creek, also known as the Battle of Oak Hills, was the first major battle of the Trans-Mississippi Theater of the American Civil War. It was fought on August 10, 1861, near Springfield, Missouri. Although a relatively small engagement by the standards set later in the war, Wilson?s Creek was a large one for 1861. Lyon?s army lost nearly a quarter of its strength, while 12 percent of the Southern army became casualties. More than 535 dead and 2,000 wounded or missing soldiers littered the field. It had been, as one Southern participant recalled, ?a mighty mean-fowt fight.?
