Item description
1981 Vintage Postcard Medieval Illustration Art Germany
Amateur Radio Operator QSL Card DL5LJ
Sent by "Bernd Jager Operator"
QTH Gurlittstrabe FO 51 a Zone 14 (street address)
DOK M 0 1
Handwritten date 16.1x.81 Which I assume might be January 16th as the DX stamped date is January 31, 1982 (which means it took a year to send).
The front side features a wonderful Wood cut style illustration like those used in old books, of a castle village
The back side has both "typed" and handwritten notes and information in green ink
Under "remarks" is typed : awdh hpe cuagn" and hand signed "Bernd"
The postcard measures 4-1/8 x 5-13/16 inches and although the tan colored card stock is not standard postcard stock it is more like a heavyweight artists paper or business card stock paper and as you can see in the scanned photos has a "grain".
CONDITION: Very good condition. Corners show very minor wear. No pin holes, stains or smudges.
If looking at the back (address side), along the far left edge is what appears to be a black smudge, but if you look at the magnified photos, you can see that it is actually a part of the drawing that is printed on the front, and if looking at the front (drawing side) it is evident that the card was cut off at the left edge as well. (It is likely that a sheet of cards was designed with a plate of both front and back design on one side, and the paper run through the printer twice).
FYI Trivia: I tried doing some research and the closest I could find was the 13th century Nikolaikirche (St Nicholas' Church)
In the Middle Ages Kiel Fjord was probably first settled by Normans or Vikings who wanted to colonize the land which they had raided, and for many years they settled in German villages.
From 1773 to 1864, the town belonged to the King of Denmark. However, because the king ruled Holstein as a fief of the Holy Roman Empire only through a personal union, the town was not incorporated as part of Denmark proper. Thus Kiel belonged to Germany, but it was ruled by the Danish king.
Lot of history there, and if anyone has any input or can identify the artwork, we would love to hear from you.
Whitey was Danish and had many friends and still had some family in Europe, and could have translated this for us if he was still here, makes us miss him all the more.
