Richard Earle "Dick" Whalen Jr. (1921-2002) had a distinguished academic career, beginning with his education at Southern Illinois State Normal University, where he earned his Bachelor?s degree. He later obtained his Master?s degree from the University of Mississippi and a Doctorate from Indiana University. Whalen went on to serve as the first president of Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois, and held notable administrative roles as Dean of Students at Dickinson State University (ND) and New Mexico Highlands University (NM). This 1940 yearbook from Southern Illinois features personal inscriptions from classmates as well as his own doodles, and original poetry. Included in the listing photos are sketches of his cartoon alter ego "Smokey" and a rather dark Baudelairian styled poem.
