1915 22KT YELLOW GOLD. DESIGN. GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT: OMN: REX F.D.D.IND.IMP 1915 COIN. The gold sovereign came into existence in 1489 under king Henry VII. For the first time in England a coin denomination was issued with a value of one pound sterling. The original design showed the king seated facing on the throne, a very majestic image. It is from his image the king or sovereign (as he was known) that the new coin gained its name - the sovereign. The reverse of the sovereign showed a shield on the large double tudor Rose. Sovereigns where it then struck for Henry VIII, and for most monarchs until the first coinage of James I. The first sovereigns occur with a number of minor type variations all of which are rare, currently cataloging from 7000 Sterling ($9,200.00 US) upwards. This original George V St., George solid gold sovereign, presented in superb condition, was minted in 1915 and shows the head of King George V, and on the reverse side depicts the famous story of St. George slaying the dragon.
