Item description

This Langdon Smith illustration art piece titled "The King's Highway" is a stunning example of book illustration art from 1909. The medium-sized painting on paper is beautifully matted and framed, making it a one-of-a-kind addition to any art collection. The artwork itself measures about 9 x 12", and the matted and framed piece measures about 12 x 16." There is a stamp on the back, the painting was authenticated by Clarke C. Brown, Executor of the Langdon Smith estate. There is a Missouri auction tag indicating that this was sold at auction in 2000. We purchased it from the estate of a Los Angeles collector in March, 2024. The author John S. McGroarty was an early 20th century author who wrote histories of California and Los Angeles. The subtitle of the book is El Camino Real. We have not obtained a copy of the book but seen parts of it digitalized. This image does not appear to be the published title page, perhaps it is a half title page or an advertisement for the publication. Langdon Smith is a listed artist as well as an illustrator. The landscape subject showcases the California region of origin, adding a unique touch of Americana to the piece. The painting is signed by the artist in the top left corner and is an original, handmade production art piece from the early 20th century. It features intricate details and a style that is characteristic of illustration art from that time period. This single piece is perfect for any art enthusiast who appreciates the history and beauty of vintage artwork.
