1 Red Buckeye Tree - Larger and Older The trees are dormant now, and ship as bareroot. Nice trees, checked and packed well, ships about 20+ inches. The trees are now dormant, leafless, and carefully lifted from the beds, handled well, and they will be packed as bare root. Order now and all the way through early-Spring. See our other listing... Popular for the stalks of red flowers in the Spring, the buckeye is a good shade tree, or useful in windbreaks and barriers. Similar to the Ohio Buckeye that has white flowers, the Red Buckeye has flowers that can vary between scarlet red to almost pink (rare). Generally, as the pictures show from our beds, the flowers are pretty consistently red. Hardy in most soils, good for Plant Zones 5 to 10, medium watering. They grow best in full sun, but partial shading fine as well. They are small but pretty fast growing... and some in the beds did start flowering, so waiting for flowers will not be very long. Give the tree time to acclimate to your soil and growing conditions. Waiting for Spring is too late... trees are best planted early-early. Tomatoes and peppers are Spring, trees and plants are best planted while dormant and cool conditions. Ponder this... - - - - - Generally plan on this: If you live in the Southern half of the country, order starting November, and take delivery right away. Plant (or pot) the tree right away. You can plant as long as your ground is not frozen. Put a thick layer of mulch around it. Get planted by mid-April before the warmer weather arrives. If you live in the Northern half of the country, order during the late Winter, and take delivery early. Pot up your tree and hold it in a dark, cool, moist location, that will get a minimal amount of light and some moisture, but cool enough to keep it dormant until you can plant it outdoors. Plant as soon as your ground thaws. After planting, put a thick layer of mulch around it. Once you get your plants, open the box and put them in a bucket of water, and plant right away. If you can not plant right away, then pot the plants or/and hold the plants in a cool dark, moist location until they can be planted. Always best to add a thick mulch layer. Having a thick layer of mulch helps to conserve soil moisture, keeps the weeds down, and helps recycle the nutrients.
