Item description
Vintage original 8x10 in. US double-weight glossy photograph from the classic 1950's comedy/drama, THE TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON, released in 1956 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and directed by Daniel Mann. Set in post-WWII Japan, an American captain (Glenn Ford) is brought in to
help build a school, but the locals want a teahouse instead.
The image features an exterior nighttime medium shot of Sakini (Marlon Brando) asking Captain Fisby (Glenn Ford) to allow him to return to the United States as the Captain's aide. The verso features a printed caption that describes the image and the film. There is also a rubber stamp credit indicating that this photograph was approved for publicity purposes by the Advertising Code Administration of Hollywood on August 31, 1956. This vintage original photograph is in very fine condition with light circular rings emanating outwards from the center (which looks like the rings of a tree) which are visible when viewing the photo at an angle. There are no pinholes, tears, stains, or other flaws and the image quality is razor-sharp with fine detail and great contrast. Star Marlon Brando looks especially handsome in his role of Sakini.
Marlon Brando's part in the movie was so convincingly "Japanese" that many theater managers reported moviegoers coming to them and
demanding their money back because (to put it simply) Marlon never appeared on
screen. The original Broadway production of "The Teahouse of the August
Moon," by John Patrick, opened at the Martin Beck Theater in New York
on October 15, 1953, ran for 1027 performances, and won the 1954 Tony Award for
the "Best Play." Paul Ford recreated his stage role of Col. Wainwright Purdy III in the movie
version.
