Item description
Vintage original 7.5 x 9.75 in. U.S single-weight glossy black-and-white photograph from the 1970's horror film, TERROR IN THE WAX MUSEUM, released in 1973 by Cinema Releasing Corporation and directed by Georg Fenady. The murder of a wax museum proprietor and some other strange goings-on in the vicinity prompt a police investigator to determine whether the killer is one of the principals who wants to own the museum or if Jack the Ripper has returned to killing after a hiatus of ten years..
The image depicts an interior close shot of Karkov (Steven Marlo), his face and hand horribly scarred by fire, standing in front of an ornately carved door as he stands hunched-over. A caption describing the image and film is featured in the bottom border This photograph was signed by Steven Marlo in black ballpoint pen to collector Eric Caidin, the long-time owner of Hollywood Book and Poster Company ("HBP") on Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California as follows: "H.B.P. Best wishes - Steven Marlo - Karkoff." Printed on single-weight stock with a glossy finish, this vintage original photograph is in very fine- condition with a light 1 in. diagonal crease beneath the center of the top border, 1.25 in. diagonal crease beneath the top border near the right corner and a 0.75 in. diagonal crease on the right edge approximately 2.25 in. from the top corner. The image quality is razor-sharp with fine detail and rich saturated contrast.
Provenance: The Eric Caidin Collection. Eric was the son of the famed movie poster collector/Beverly Hills attorney Stanley Caidin, whose world-class collection was sold by Sotheby's in the mid-1990's. In addition to being a movie lover, Eric's passion was horror and slasher films and professional wrestling. Due to his ownership of his store, he was able to meet and befriend many Hollywood celebrities (including those behind as well as in front of the camera) as well as professional wrestlers and musicians. Sadly, Eric died in May of 2015. His personal collection as well as the contents of his store were subsequently sold at auction by Profiles in History (Calabasas, California) at their Hollywood Auction 83 held on June 29 - July 1, 2016. The section related to his estate is in the accompanying auction catalog was featured on pages 43 - 57. Lot #104 ("Collection of 250+ original vintage and contemporary film and television ephemera including many signed pieces c.1940's - 2010") was purchased by our consignor of this item who has subsequently given it to us to sell on their behalf.
