Item description
Vintage original 27x41 in. US one-sheet poster from the 1950's war drama, THE RACK, released in 1956 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and directed by Arnold Laven. Paul Newman stars as a decorated Korean War hero who inexplicably collaborates with
the enemy while interred in a POW camp and is court-martialed.
The design features beautifully rendered artwork depicting a large close shot of Capt. Edward Worthington Hall, Jr. (Paul Newman) with a smaller image of Aggie Hall (Anne Francis) above him and four pieces of sturdy bamboo in the bottom half. Next to his image, Newman is described as "a wonderful new star." Unrestored and folded as originally issued, this vintage original one-sheet poster is in near-fine condition with a Canadian censor stamp in the top right panel; multiple creases down the center of the poster (which would disappear if the poster were to be linen-backed); and light signs of wear on portions of the edges. The color tints are fresh and vibrant without any signs of fading. A great image of Paul Newman from very early in his feature film career.
The Rack was Oscar-winning Art Director Cedric Gibbons' last feature
film. In 1956, Walter Pidgeon and Anne Francis appeared
as father and daughter in Forbidden Planet and then as
father-in-law and daughter-in-law in this film. Rod
Serling took nineteen months to complete The Rack as a screenplay, the longest
amount of time he ever spent writing a single screenplay. It also took seven
rewrites to get to the final version, the most of any of his screenplays.
