COVER: The Rebellious Democrats. Cover: Photo by Susan T. McElhinney.
TOP OF THE WEEK:
REPAIRING TINY HEARTS: Not long ago, a baby born with a severe congenital heart defect stood little chance of living a normal life. Today, surgeons dare to open the hearts of even the smallest infants and repair the most lethal deformities. Using new techniques, including more precise diagnosis and a radical cooling of body temperature, cardiologists like Mary Allen Engle (below) enable youngsters to lead full, active lives.
HEROES IN MOSCOW: The Moscow Olympics, designed for a minimum of surprise and spontaneity, hardly seemed a promising stage for mold-breaking heroes. But individualists like Britain's Sebastian Coe, winner of the 1,500-meter race (above), and maverick long jumper Lutz Dombrowski of East Germany helped liven the sometimes stolid atmosphere.
THE BANKRUPTCY EPIDEMIC: Record numbers of Americans are going into bankruptcy this year. Some new laws make the prospect more attractive--and many crit- ics think they go too far.
SKY PAINTING: Every year, an army of fierce warriors, pudgy wrestlers (above) and popeyed insects takes to the skies over Japan. The art of the kite is one of Japan's oldest traditions, now on display in New York.
THE REBELLIOUS DEMOCRATS: On the eve of the Democratic convention, Jimmy Carter suddenly found himself in a brush-fire war to save his Presidency from repudiation by his own panicky party. His Harris-poll rating tumbled to a new low for any modern President. His brother Billy had become a daily embarrassment. Boomlets were forming behind three or four anybody-but-Carter candidates, and the momentum was building to "open" the convention. NEWSWEEK'S coverage includes a special poll that rates Carter's potential Democratic replacements and assesses the Presi- dent's handling of the Billy affair.
