Item description
20 Seeds Yellow Necklacepod Silver Bush Sophora Tomentosa
Yellow necklacepod or yellow sophora is an evergreen shrub with a delicate, multi-stemmed shape and chartreuse branches. Silvery-green foliage provides a backdrop for the 4-16 in spikes of yellow flowers. Seedpods hang on the shrub for a year or more. This plant grows 3-6 feet in height. A native of southern Florida and South Texas, where it is infrequent along and near the coast as far north as Aransas county. Its overall natural range comprises just about every tropical and subtropical coast in the world. This shrub is hardy to about 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Necklace Pod is a unique looking large shrub. Many use it for accent plantings and specimen shrubs. Its salt tolerance is very high, making the Necklace Pod a perfect addition to your coastal garden, but feel free to plant it in hammock settings too, as it will flourish just as much. Its gray/green leaves, yellow flowers, and cool seed pods add great texture and color to your landscape. It is drought tolerant, making it a very low maintenance plant once established. S. tomentosa is an exquisite ornamental/accent shrub due to its gray/green hued leafs. Its leaves are composed of little leaflets on a long stalk, almost resembling a fern. Its seed pods can reach lengths of up to 6 inches, looking very much like a pearl necklace. When in bloom, its flowers are a beautiful yellow, borne on 6-15 inch-long spikes. The Necklace Pod can grow from 4 feet to 15 feet high. Use as an accent tree or shrub. It has a long blooming period, tolerates poor soils, and is easy to grow. This shrub is a wonderful food and cover source for wildlife, with its showy yellow flowers attracting hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and warblers.
Growing Instructions
1. Soak the seeds in water for several hours.
2. Put a mixture of potting soil and sand or perlite into a pot with drainage holes in the base.
3. Sow the seeds on the soil.
4. Cover the seeds with a layer of soil that is 0.5 inches thick.
5. Water the seeds.
6. The seeds take a few weeks to germinate.
7. When the plants are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
