A CONVERSATION WITH CONSTANCE FLAVELL PRATT by Charles Movalli. In this candid interview, this successful Massachusetts portraitist recalls the early years of her career when she executed dozens of pastel portraits in a matter of days, and she relates how that experience helped her develop her skills.
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: DAVID NEWTON. This New York City artist finds watercolor an ideal medium with which to paint the city, owing to its simplicity and light weight. Here he offers some tips for other on-location city painters.
COVER ARTIST: JOE SWEENEY by William P. Scott. The Schuylkill River -- a popular subject for generations of Pennsylvania artists -- provides much of the source material for Sweeney's oils and pastels. Here the artist discusses the techniques he employs in creating his vistas of boathouses along the river.
CAREN CANIER: RECREATING THE FAMILIAR by Jeanne Mackin. This young New York painter's "landscapes and still lifes are rich with the mundane and familiar; the song they sing is a gentle one, filled with images of home and family and friends," writes the author.
T. J. DIXON by Peter Eichner-Dixon. Working with terra-cotta clay which she prepares according to her own formula, this Colorado artist shapes dramatic life-sized figurative sculptures with simple tools. The artist demonstrates her procedures for working from live models and how she sculpts and fires the clay.
USING PHOTOGRAPHS IN PAINTING PORTRAITS by Patricia Hill Burnett. This portraitist from Michigan offers practical advice for taking and using photographs when painting portraits. Some of the topics covered: lighting, posing, and the psychology of portrait photography.
