COVER: August Still Life (detail), by Stone Roberts, 1989, oil, 46 x 54. Collection Mr. and Mrs. Alan J. Hruska. Courtesy
Salander- O'Reilly Galleries, Inc., New York, New York.
FEATURES:
NUTS BOLTS; Resources and practical information for artists, including an article on cover artist Stone Roberts.
DAN OSTERMILLER: L'ANIMALIER by Donna H. Fleischer. A love of wildlife and a thorough knowledge of taxidermy have been
two strong influences in the work of this animal sculptor. He says, "An effective piece should draw the viewer in, inviting
him or her to experience it through touch.".
PRINTS THAT PARALLEL PAINTINGS by Teriy James. Richard Thomas Davis makes screen prints using a complex printing
process that often includes more than twenty separate runs through the press. The resulting prints are nearly as detailed
and subtle as his oil paintings.
THE RAW AND THE COOKED by Paula Champa. With unusual setups and a limited palette, Virginia artist Polly Dixon creates
straight- forward paintings that address complicated questions about what's old, what's new, what's real, and what's
artificial.
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: CREATING A SENSE OF PLACE by Alan Singer. Robert Heischman's most recent works focus sharply
on the cultured landscape of the formal garden. These mixed- media paintings reveal the artist's lifelong subjects,
suggesting his interest in structure and the dramatic effects of light on natural forms.
FOR THE LOVE OF PAINTING by Diane Casella Hines. Throughout her career as an artist, Betty Buckner has had to overcome
obstacles. Recently, her home and studio were destroyed in the fires that ravaged Southern California. Now she faces her
greatest challenge--starting over.
PAINTING THE LIFE WE SHARE by M Stephen Doherty. As Irene Buszko paints on location in California, Oregon, New Jersey,
or New York, she continually edits the elements within the scene, resulting in well-composed records of the life she's
observed.
