DONALD HOLDEN by M Stephen Doherty. Although he is an expert on materials and techniques, this artist and writer tries to
make his artwork as direct, uncomplicated, and unpredictable as it can be.
PAINTING WITH OIL STICKS by Edward Feit. After 1983, when her pastels were featured in the magazine, Jacqueline Chesley
discovered oil sticks as a medium suitable to her style and choice of subjects.
MEL PEKARSKY by Lynn Kari Petrich. Concerned about the "moral imperative in contemporary art," this New York artist asks
himself the question: "Is what I am painting worth doing?".
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: JUDY RICHARDSON GARD. This award-winning Texas artist explains her approach to watercolor.
JOHN TAYE'S BASSWOOD SCULPTURES by David Vaughn. This sculptor and teacher from Idaho demonstrates how he carves
detailed still lifes in basswood.
WATERCOLORS THAT TRANSPORT artwork and text by Alfred Leslie. edited by Laurie S. Hurwitz. Over a six-year period,
Alfred Leslie created a series of one hundred black-and-white watercolors from drawings made while traveling around the
country. Those pictorial narratives are now circulating as an exhibition and are reproduced in a hardcover book.
PAINTING A PORTABLE MURAL by Gretchen Olson. Oregon artist Steve Ominski used hardboard panels to create a thirty-
two-foot wall mural in his twenty-seven-foot country studio.
