COVER: The SHAME of COLLEGE SPORTS. Cover: Photo by Mark Kozlowski. Jersey by Brothers Lettering.
TOP OF THE WEEK [Major Top Stories] :
EAST MEETS WEST: Trade between China and the United States is finally taking off. There are still some
big obstacles to a full-scale boom-from China's cash shortage to America's misperceptions of what its new
customer wants. But progress has been steady- and soon China will be the biggest U.S. trade partner in
the Communist world. Page 65.
CANADA'S WEST: Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau failed last week in an attempt to draft a new
Canadian constitution. The strongest opposition to Trudeau's plan came from the thinly settled but oil-rich
provinces in the West, where resentment is growing rapidly against political domination by the populous
East. Page 42.
THEN THERE WERE TWO: The League of Women Voters invited independent candidate John Anderson to
join its first Presidential debate-and President Carter refused to participate. Both Anderson and
Republican candidate Ronald Reagan made Carter's move a campaign issue, but the President was
gambling that criticism of him would be far less damaging than the credibility Anderson would gain in a
three-way debate. Page 24.
SPORTS SCANDALS: College sports are under a shadow of corruption. Top universities have been caught
forging academic transcripts of players. Coaches take kickbacks, youngsters are recruited with payoffs,
and course requirements for many athletes are often a cynical joke. The problem is explored-and
countermeasures proposed. Page 54.
KHOMEINI'S TERMS: Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini intervened in the hostage crisis-and seemed to create
new hope for an end to the ten-month ordeal. Spelling out his terms for a settlement, Khomeini did not
insist on a U.S. apology to Iran or a spy trial for the hostages. The United States responded to his terms
with optimism-tempered with great caution. Page 22.
