Item description
This is a vintage original 11x14 in. US lobby card from the greatest of all Hammer horror films, HORROR OF DRACULA (UK title: Dracula), released in the US in 1958 by Universal-International and directed by Terence Fisher. Based upon the famous novel by Bram Stoker, Jonathan Harker (John Van Eyssen) begets the ire of Count Dracula (Christopher Lee) after he accepts a job at the vampire's castle under false pretenses.
The scene is from the start of the film's extraordinary climax and depicts an exterior shot outside of Count Dracula's castle as he (Christopher Lee) tosses the unconscious body of Mina Holmwood (Melissa Stribling) into an open grave that he dug just as the morning sun's rise start to rise and he has to flee to the safety of his crypt. Printed for the film's original 1958 US theatrical release, this vintage original lobby card is unrestored in fine+ condition with creases in the right border; one pinhole in or near three of the four corners; a few small scattered stains or smudges in the left and bottom borders; and random signs of wear along the edges. The color tints are fresh and vibrant without any signs of fading.
In the US, the
title was changed to Horror of Dracula
to avoid confusion with the classic Universal Pictures version of Dracula (1931).
This was a real concern since the Bela Lugosi version was still being
booked into theaters (through Realart) until the Shock Theatre package of
classic Universal horror movies was released to television. The filming of
Dracula's destruction included a shot in which Dracula appears to peel away his
decaying skin. This was accomplished by putting a layer of red make-up on
Sir Christopher Lee's face, and then covering his entire face with a thin
coating of mortician's wax, which was then made up to conform to his normal
skin tone. When he raked his fingers across the wax, it revealed the
"raw" marks underneath. This startling sequence was cut out but was
restored for the 2012 Blu-ray release, using footage from a badly damaged
Japanese print.
The cape worn by Sir Christopher Lee was
discovered in 2007 in a London costume shop during its annual inventory-taking.
It had been missing for thirty years, and is believed to be worth around $50,000 us. Lee was contacted to verify its authenticity.
