Item description
Harrap's German Phrase Book (1989 Paperback)
Author:
LEXUS with Horst Kopleck
Publisher: Passport Books
Lincolnwood, IL U.S.A. 1989
Specifically designed to meet the needs of travelers,
Harrap's German Phrase Book is invaluable for effective communication
in German-speaking countries. Conveniently pocket-sized, this handy
volume is divided into two distinct sections. The 1st section offers
phrases grouped under 19 headings for everyday situations. The
second section has a guide to German grammar, as well as a both way
German/English dictionary of 5,000 entries.
Along with the US based database named LexisNexis by a subsidiary of the Mead Corporation (1970) and the luxury automobile Lexus by Toyota (1987), there is a UK translation company named Lexus (1980).
Since its beginnings in 1980, UK's Lexus gathered teams
of authors and editors to compile a wide range of bilingual
dictionaries, phrasebooks and schoolbooks, totaling over 200 titles
in 29 languages. The Lexus input ranges from the creation of a
completely new series of books to specialized translation work within
the framework of a given text. The publishing service includes
recruitment, team-building, project management, text processing and
typesetting.
Before setting up Lexus in Scotland, Peter Terrell was
editor-in-chief of the acclaimed Collins German-English Dictionary.
Apparently, Lexus offer to produce several “store
brand” versions of this book for publishers around the world. What
is unique about this copy is the ISBN on reverse of title page
(0-245-54750-9) does not match the ISBN on the rear cover
(0-8442-9928-6), generally a sure sign of a 1st print-run
or even a pirated set of plates!
Small paperback has been carefully used. Designed to
have creases in covers, this copy has creases in spine. Interior is
tight, clean and unmarked. Corners are square although blunted
opposite spine.
Size: 24mo - over 5 - 5"
tall, 128pp.
Condition: Very Good
Pocket-sized Paperback – Always Privately owned, 1st

Notes on
Condition/Edition ratings:
Fine – means like new, but any
book produced over 10 years ago isn't “brand new”.
Booksellers needed some word to describe this...
Like New – A new book, no
marks no damage (except maybe remainder marks or shelf-wear) except
not obtained directly from the publisher or in packaging from the
publisher.
Very Good – How you or I might
take care of a book, closer to “as new” than standard. Might show
ownership.
Good – How someone else might
take care of a book. Also referred to as “standard.” The most
likely condition
for books of this age
title, shows the book has been read or previously owned.
Acceptable – How a child,
student or a librarian might take care of a book. (Either trying to
make sure
someone doesn't steal it by
plastering ownership everywhere, filled it with copious notes or a
book that has been damaged.)
Poor – Combination of
“acceptable” factors above. Most likely with water damage as
well. Might have
missing pages (you should ask).
Near – Means “almost” in
an optimistic sense. e.g., “Near Fine” means very good, but on
the high end.
1st
Thus
– Unique somehow, maybe 1st
paperback,
new illustrator, misprint or even the 1st
edition.
A collector
might desire this copy.
