Item description
Here is a wonderful old sterling silver small bowl or candy dish arts crafts style estimated from the turn of the century. The bowl weighs approx. 6.06 troy oz and is approx. 4 3/4" across and 1 1/2 inches tall.It is in good antique condition with some minor surface scratches. Very nice hand hammered finish with scalloped edge. Just charming. The back of the bowl is signed Welsch, the a lama logo, then "Plata Esterlina" for Sterling silver in Spanish. "A Mano" - meaning by Hand, "Industria Peruana 8550". The bowl has a nice weight of 6.06 troy ounces. Really nice hand work here. Here are some information of the maker that I found on the internet:
Casa Welsch was founded in 1858 and was a subsidiary of a German firm Geo Ehni Co. A building erected by the company and opened in 1906 is still standing in Lima, and is occupied by a Starbucks Coffee. They apparently still operate as a retailer in Lima, but not as silversmiths, and are known by the name Cabuchon. Not sure when the name changed or when they quit making Silver. Geo Ehni, the German owner, was apparently a driving force in the creation of the Chamber of commerce in Lima in the late 1800’s.
Welsch Co., a wealthy German firm, have a predominant position in the Peruvian jewelry trade, and the number of other firms devoted to this line that are worthy of any amount of credit is very limited. Most or all of them are retail firms located in Lima or Arequipa. As it is hardly likely that Welsch Co. will give preference to American goods and as there are no other wholesale jewelers in Peru, no existing means are apparent for distributing our goods throughout the country. The parent corporation of Welsch Co. is Ehni Co., of Stuttgart, Germany. They maintain the finest equipped jewelry store and several smaller ones in Lima, two stores in Arequipa, and several in other cities. In towns too small to support a store they have agents or send salesmen with stock to cover the trade periodically. For example, they sell jewelry at the mines on pay day and in general cover the whole market thoroughly. Of the other most important retail jewelers five are of Italian origin, three German, one Spanish, and one Chilean.
