Dimensions: 38 x 17 mm Condition: Mint Audemars Piguet The Audemars Piguet story began in 1875 when twenty three year old watchmaker Jules Audemars, and his future partner Edward-August Piguet himself just twenty-one years old, met in the Vallee de Joux, Switzerland. Both had learned watch making as apprentices after finishing primary school in their hometown of Le Brassus, and returned to the Vallee de Joux to find jobs in the local watch making industry. Jules Audemars was soon producing raw components for watch movements, while Edward-August Piguet worked independently offering his services as a "repasseur", the master watchmaker who carries out a watch movement's final adjustment. Shortly after their 1875 encounter, the two decided to join forces and founded the firm that later was named Audemars, Piguet et Cie. From the onset, Audemars oversaw production and technical aspects, while his partner Piguet focused on the commercial aspects. However, The undertaking was not an immediate success; and they only registered their brand in 1882, and officially founded the company in 1889. Never the less, by this time, Audemars Piguet et Cie already was the third largest watch making employer in the Canton of Vaud, and. the company had firmly fixed their focus on producing highest quality, complex, ultra precision watches. 1889 also saw Audemars Piguet become a full fledged "manufacture", when the partners decided to manufacture and assemble all their components in-house. This allowed the firm to maintain strict quality control over their products and consequently produce time pieces of only the highest quality, a factor reflected in their early production of only slightly over 1200 watches between 1894 and 1899. Around the turn of the century Audemars Piguet also opened production branches in Geneva and London, where watches not only were serviced but new watches also assembled. At about this same time, the retail operations in Geneva and London were transformed into full-service branches where watches were not only serviced but also assembled. Audemars Piguet's production during the 1890s already had included some of the most sophisticated timepieces ever made, including their legendary "Grande Complication" series which comprised minute repeaters, perpetual calendars as well as chronographs, and still is in production to this day; however, In about 1914, Audemars Piguet launched a milestone project to develop a watch so complicated that it required six years of continuous development to complete. The piece, a special order from AP importers Guignard Golay in London, was an 18K gold pocket watch with double Llepine calibre one minute tourbillion and two separate dials. Its functions included: minute repeater, 60-minute/12-hour chronograph, jump indicator perpetual calendar and power reserve. Additionally, the second dial displayed 24 hour sidereal time as well as a depiction of the London sky at any time of day or night. Even after the founders' deaths in 1918, Audemars Piguet continued to set numerous technical milestones, including the world's smallest minute repeater only 15.8 millimeters in diameter and, in 1925, the world's thinnest pocket watch measuring just 1.32 millimetres in thickness.
