Description:
Looking for a wildflower that really stands out? Fireweed is your plant! With its tall, showy blooms in vibrant pink shades, this flower adds excitement to any garden. Fireweed is fairly easy to grow and thrives in diverse habitats, from sea level to the subalpine zone. A symbol of the Alaska and Yukon region, these beautiful pink blossoms not only enhance your garden but also have a slight spicy flavor that can add intrigue to your dishes.
Planting Instructions:
Seed Germination: Fireweed seeds are very small and germinate more successfully when direct sown outdoors in the fall. They can also be moderately easy to germinate in flats. To aid germination, a stratification technique is recommended. This involves a simple 30-day cold, moist refrigeration period to speed up germination.
Site Selection: Choose an area with full to partial sunlight, ideally near drainage ditches or bodies of water, where humidity levels are higher.
Soil Preparation: Ensure the soil is moist to slightly soggy. Remove any weeds from the planting area, then use a small tiller or shovel to mix the soil and fertilizer to a depth of about 5 inches. Smooth out the surface without packing it down firmly.
Sowing: Spread the fireweed seeds over the soil, placing them about 3 feet apart, as the plants will grow quickly and fill in bare spots. Cover the seeds with 1/2 inch of soil.
Watering: Water the seeds after planting, and only water again when the soil feels dry or during drought conditions. Once established, fireweed requires little to no additional watering.
