The Mint Act of February 21, 1857, replaced the copper large cent with a much smaller one. The new cent, designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, featured a flying eagle on the obverse and an agricultural wreath on the reverse. Minted only in 1857 and 1858, the Flying Eagle cent is one of the shortest-lived of all U.S. coin designs.
