COVER: While capturing the NHRA Winternationals action, Paul Sadler clicked off this tire-blazing burnout by the new Sundance Monza Funny Car. He used 35mm Ektachrome-X film with an exposure setting of f8 @ 1 /250th second.
44. Last November 1 this guy from New Paris, Indiana, hit the G i Gas record from a 10.67 to a 10.61. For the life of me, I couldn't imagine why anyone would want to go and do a thing like that. The record was le just where it was--not as soft as some in Modified iminator, but comfortable. The record list read Jerry arquart, and it took but a few minutes to place him. A w years back, he was low qualifier at Sanair--ahead of evins. Riffle, Crider, Ferrara, and myself. In fact, I re-embered seeing the car at Indy, but it wasn't until a tier slipped across my desk that it dawned on me just )w fast this Jerry Marquart has gotten his i-pound-per-inch piece running. Along with some im-essive construction shots were a few time slips that lowed e is of 10.3's and 10.4's, and mph figures be-teen 128-132. A phone call to Indiana and a short rap ith Jerry disclosed the fact that the body would unbolt Dm the Corvette frame, and that he didn't mind the hour job if it would help show off the car's unique )nstruction, We had already committed ourselves to dog the story, but while he was busy sewing up class at Dmona, Jerry proved his performances were not flukes r laying down a very quiet 10.36. Now if you've ever in an 11-pound car, brother, you know that's fast.
78. You know a man's schedule is tight when you have to squeeze in an interview during a basketball game. But that's Bob Glidden. He's a mover from the old school, one who believes in getting the job done through hours of work--his own and his crew's. National publicity is an important factor in a professional drag racer's career. Bob's on top of things enough to realize this, but the interesting thing about him and his wife Etta is that they have priorities. They have their life together, their family, drag racing, and their shop in Indiana--and now they have not one, not two, but three Pro Stockers. The shop is pretty much self-sufficient, but even with doing all the work in-house, it takes precious hours and one heck of a schedule to keep one car, let alone three. They have a plan, and each carries out different responsibilities--and thank God the family is growing older. It shouldn't be too long before young Bill (that's him dribbling down the court) takes a soot in dad's shop, and hopefully with the camp.
