This hand painted Japanese Hakata boy doll/figurine is posed in a fighting stance. The hand painting is still vibrant, very detailed and precise. He appears to be made of a lightweight, hollow, chalk ware/ceramic material. He is in excellent shape for his age, minus the stick or sword that would have been held in his hands. The Hakata doll gained fame when American soldiers took them back to the US as souvenirs during the American occupation of Japan following the Second World War. Japan started exporting Hakata dolls soon afterwards.
