Item description
MCM 1960's Felipe Filipe DERFLINGHER Mexican Modernist Brutalist Amber Caged Imprisoned Glass Pitcher
Designed and Hand Blown by Mexico City Modernist Glass Artist Felipe Derflingher ~ Circa 1960s
Measures approx. 10" tall x 5 1/4" rim diameter x 7" from back of handle to tip of spout.
Body is 4 5/8" in diameter.
Weighs 2 lbs. 6 oz. prior to packaging.
Features an applied handle. Has a rough pontil mark on base.
This pitcher was made by welding a metal form, with diamond cut outs, into a cylinder. Then molten glass from broken bottles was hand blown into the cylinder so it bulges out through the openings, hence the term "imprisoned glass"or "caged glass". The metal is then discolored under intense heat to give it the blackened look and feel of Medieval craftsmanship.
Combining metal and recycled glass bottles, the result is a unique beauty of exquisite crude craftsmanship in a Modernist Brutalist style.
GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION ~ There is a small ping/crack within the glass wall on the bottom edge of the pitcher. Can only be seen if turned over. It is completely enclosed within the wall, with no rough spots/exterior damage. A few specks of mild patina visible on the metal casing, if you look very closely. Not noticeable on display. No other nicks, chips, cracks, or damage noted. There are the typical air bubbles associated with hand blown pieces scattered throughout the glass, and rough unpolished pontil scar on bottom.
