Item description
Western Electric 500
Origins
The renowned Western Electric Model 500 emerged as a successor to the model 302, swiftly establishing itself as the primary choice in Northern and Western Electric's telephone offerings. Initially available in black, brown, white, beige, blue, green, pink, and yellow, the Model 500 showcased versatility in its color palette over the years.
Restoration Process
Dial: The 9C dial undergoes a meticulous refurbishment, including full disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, and timing adjustments to ensure reliable performance for years to come. Additionally, a new finger wheel, die-cut dial card, and acetate are installed for added functionality and aesthetics.
Cords: Equipped with fresh handset and line cords featuring modular connections for seamless integration with modern wall jacks, enhancing user convenience.
Shell: The ITT plastic shell undergoes a comprehensive restoration process involving multiple steps, such as sanding with varying grits (400, 800, 1000, 2000) to eliminate imperfections like scratches and dents. Subsequently, meticulous buffing on two-step buffing wheels eradicates fine abrasions, resulting in a pristine, factory-like finish. A three-step plastic restoration compound is then applied to achieve a glossy appearance, distinguishing it from merely painted counterparts.
Handset: Subjected to ultrasonic cleaning to remove embedded debris, followed by the same sanding and buffing process as the shell to restore its original luster.
Base: Stripped of all components and thoroughly sandblasted for cleanliness before being sealed with a clear coat, ensuring durability and longevity.
