The song became the first of two major disco-styled hits for Streisand, the other being "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough), later the same year. The Main Event/Fight spent four weeks at No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. In Canada it reached No. 5. It was also a major Adult Contemporary hit, reaching No. 2 and No. 1 in those nations, respectively. The song did not chart outside North America.
