Item description
Stories by Mrs. Molesworth. Compiled by Sidney Baldwin and illustrated by Edna Cooke. Reprinted in 1935 by The Dial Press, Inc.
Hardcover in fine condition. Writing on inside cover page. 353 pages. 8 beautiful color plates with the frontispiece. Reprint of the 1922 Duffield edition, though a very nice one. It measures 9.5? X 7.25? X 1.75?.
This book is rare and very special. Illustrations are exquisite. This would make a wonderful gift for a young person.
Known as "the Jane Austen of the nursery," Mary Louisa Molesworth (1839-1921) was a popular English writer of 19th-century stories for girls. She wrote under the name of Mrs Molesworth. ?Her work, though not without its amusements, had a good deal of moral instruction, emphasizing Victorian notions of duty and self-sacrifice. Nine are compiled here for American readers: The Cuckoo Clock, The Six Poor Little Princesses, Too Bad, Carrots, Mary Ann Jolly, Basil's Violin, The Reel Fairies, The Blue Dwarfs, and Good Night Winny.?
Boards are orange cloth with the front board having a pictorial pastedown; spine has the title and publisher in gold gilt. No corners rubbed through, no corner curls, no edge wear, minor spine wear. No foxing; normal toning. Spine tight. Eight beautiful full-page color plates by Edna Cooke in brilliant primary colors. Quite a special book.
