Item description
this listing is for absolutely gorgeous and quite rare necklace!
This authentic Old (Vintage / Antique) Navajo necklace set with very substantial UNBELIEVABLE, Beautiful in color natural High quality (Fine Gem quality) turquoise cabochons! please see photos for a description.
it is in very good condition and the sterling silver shows age patina which was not removed, the links are thick and well made!! the cabochons set very secure! VERY well built necklace!! also please see last photo - this is how the clasp looks like and can you see the braided halfs of the clasp holders - aren't they amazing!? have you ever seen anything like this? this necklace probably was made during Art Deco/Post ArtDeco period!
size approx 16.5"
in my opinion it is perfect weight to wear comfortably without discomfort around the neck where the skin is very fragile. this necklace in my opinion has optimal size/weight/length balance!
marked sterling, possibly symbol, but partially unreadable because of patina and age.
the turquoise stones are backed -
about Backing : from a popular online source-
"Since FINER turquoise is often found as thin seams, it may be glued to a base of stronger foreign material as a means of reinforcement. These stones are termed "backed," and it is standard practice that all thinly cut turquoise in the Southwestern United States is backed. Native indigenous peoples of this region, because of their considerable use and wearing of turquoise, have found that backing increases the durability of thinly cut slabs and cabochons of turquoise. They observe that if the stone is not backed it will often crack. Backing of turquoise is not widely known outside of the Native American and Southwestern United States jewellery trade.
Backing does NOT diminish the value of HIGH quality turquoise, and indeed the process is expected for most thinly cut American commercial gemstones"?
