FRONT COVER: Portrait of Nancy, by Howard Chandler Christy, oil, 40 x 30. Col- lection Mr. and Mrs. Alan Goffman. Courtesy Harry N. Abrams, Inc.
HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY by Susan E. Meyer. Although Christy was one of the most well known and flamboyant representatives of America's Golden Age of Illustration, little has been written of him. Our Editor provides this important contribution.
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: PAUL NAGANO. Inspired by the poems and paintings of a Japanese artist of the 18th century, this Boston artist has developed a kind of oriental pointillism. He discusses this approach.
MARY TOWN by Ellen Edwards. This young Michigan artist was attracted to pottery and stitchery before she discovered painting and even considered doing each commercially. Her oils reflect her interest in the play of patterns, color, texture, and special dimension.
WARRINGTON COLESCOTT: BETWEEN TRAGEDY AND HIGH COMEDY by Debby Well. "A critic in the tradition of Hogarth and Daumier," says one critic. Not so, says this Wisconsin printmaker: "I'm not a philosopher." But he is a critic whose source of material is his own personal outrage.
MARIO LARRINAGA: THE STORY OF A LUCKY ARTIST by Mary Carroll Nelson. Brief notes on the fascinating career of this California artist: set designer for motion pictures, art director, freelance designer and illustrator for top magazines, and award winning painter.
HE EYE AND THE CAMERA: DISTORTIONS IN PHOTOGRAPHY by Richard Paul Britell. Since the invention of the camera obscura, artists have been influenced by mechanical images. However, photographs are quite different from the images the human eye and brain perceive. The article compares the structure of lens images and their "distortion," beginning with the principle of optical projection.
LOOKING AT PAINTINGS with Bernard Dunstan.
FORUM: ARE WOMEN ARTISTS DISCRIMINATED AGAINST?
by Joyce Weinstein and Isabel Bishop.
AMERICAN ARTIST FIRST NATIONAL ART COMPETITION:
FINALISTS AND SEMI-FINALISTS.
SKETCH PAD by J. DeVelasco.
BULLETIN BOARD FOOTNOTES; LETTERS TO THE EDITOR; ART BOOKS; ART MART.
PROFESSIONAL PAGE by Betty Chamberlain.
TECHNICAL PAGE by Ralph Mayer.
