GERMINATION PROCEDURE:
Dig a hole of 4-5cm into the soil, let the tip or the pointed part of the seed face down; that is where the roots will shoot from. Cover the seed with a little sand; be sure the Fluted pumpkin seed in is well covered to avoid exposure to the sun. After 10 days, place a stick of 1m-2m heights close to the pumpkin seed. The plant will climb around the stick while growing.
DESCRIPTION:
Ugu ("Telfairia occidentalis","ikong-ubong") plants produce large, dark green edible leaves that can be eaten raw or cooked as a vegetable. It's considered a "superfood”. Ugu is typically grown vertically on trestle-like structures; however, it can be allowed to spread flat on a field. Harvesting can be done every 2 weeks.
PRODUCT INFORMATION:
"UGU", Telfairia occidentalis otherwise called fluted pumpkin is one of the commonest, popular cut herbs grown mainly in southeastern Nigeria and belongs to the cucurbitaceace family. The crop, which originated from West Africa, is a perennial climber grown for its leaves and seeds, which are very nutritious. When cultivated, the fluted pumpkins develop tendrils that usually creep and spread on the surface of the ground. Characterised by broad lobed leaves, the fluted pumpkin leaves (Telfairia Occidentalis) is locally referred to as ugu leaves and culinarily used for cooking stews, soups, yam and vegetables, sauces and even for medicinal purposes.
