Cut salutation SIGNED by the author is attached to the front pastedown endpaper.
Maroon cloth with gilt spine titles, top edge gilt.
Tiny speck to the front cover, else a near fine, tight copy in gilt-stamped maroon cloth; lacking dust jacket.
A record of the author's wanderings in England and experiences as a student in France and Germany.
Also includes an account of the his service in the Civil War with the 176th regiment, New York Volunteers, 1862-1865.
George Haven Putnam (1844--1930) was an American publisher, soldier, and writer. He was the president of G.P. Putnam's sons for its first 52 years, from 1872.
Tall octavo.
447 pages; indexed.
It appears that some copies were issued with a frontispiece and at least one more illustration and some were not.
This copy has no illustrations.
