Item description
Vintage original 8x10 in. US single-weight glossy photograph from the classic 1950's action/adventure drama/romance, PRINCE VALIANT, released in 1954 by 20th Century-Fox and directed by Henry Hathaway. The image features a great interior medium publicity shot of handsome Robert Wagner in costume as Prince Valiant, wearing chainmail, fisticuffs, and sporting a page-boy hairstyle. It is in very fine condition without any pinholes, tears, stains, or other flaws and the image quality is razor-sharp with very fine detail and nice contrast. It has a curl along the top and bottom and can easily be flattened if desired. Great gay interest in this beefcake image!
The comic strip, "Prince Valiant," was created by Hal Foster (1892-1982) in 1937. As of 2019, it was still running in more than 300 Sunday newspapers. Foster last drew the strip in 1971. Since then, eight other artists have drawn the classic strip. Since Prince Valiant's years-in-the-telling story line in the comics was so sprawling and complex, the property is said to have languished at MGM, where no writer could get a handle on it. When MGM eventually allowed its option to lapse, it was picked-up by Fox. There, Oscar-winning screenwriter, Dudley Nichols devised a script by selecting panels from the comic strip to create a much more concise storyboard from which to work. None of the locations were "stock footage," since this was one of the first motion pictures to be filmed in the CinemaScope process. The locations were shot by a second unit in England during the spring and summer of 1953, specifically for this film. Stand-ins doubled for the principal cast in long shots, which were then matched at 20th Century-Fox studios and ranch in California during the autumn of 1953. The English stand-in for Janet Leigh's "Aleta" character was a teenage Shirley Eaton, later to become a "James Bond girl" in Goldfinger (1964).
Plot: Young Prince Valiant, son of the exiled King of Scandia, journeys to Camelot to become a knight at King Arthur's Round Table. He hopes to help his father reclaim his throne from the pagan Viking usurper Sligon and restore the Christian faith to their homeland. On his journey he stumbles upon a mysterious Black Knight plotting with Sligon's representatives to overthrow Arthur. Barely escaping with his life, Valiant encounters Sir Gawain, one of the most illustrious knights of the Round Table, and an old friend of his father's, who tutors the young Viking in the skills needed to be a knight. Valiant and Gawain's pupil-mentor relationship is complicated by their romantic involvement with Princess Aleta and her sister Ilene, daughters of the King of Ord. If Valiant is to restore his father's throne and prevent the coup d'etat against Arthur, he must uncover the true identity of the Black Knight.
