This plant's roots possess root nodules, which harbor a symbiotic species of actinomycotal fungus, which fixes nitrogen at a faster rate than do the legumes. M. cerifera's root system is fire-resistant .After less damaging fires, new shoots will re grow from below ground. This re growth is most rapid in the first season after a fire. Tests of burning, chopping, and blading methods for m. cerifera control found that wax-myrtle can return to pretreatment levels within 3 years.
