Myrica cerifera is a small tree or large shrub native to North
America. Its common names include Southern Wax myrtle, Southern Bayberry,
Candleberry, Bayberry tree, and Tallow shrub
Myrica cerifera is a small tree or large shrub and is adaptable to
many habitats...M. cerifera is an evergreen. The fruit is a source of
food for many bird species. This plant's roots possess root nodules, which
harbor a symbiotic species of actinomycotal fungus, which fixes nitrogen at a
faster rate than do the legumes. M. cerifera's root system is
fire-resistant .After less damaging fires, new shoots will re grow from below
ground. This re growth is most rapid in the first season after a fire. Tests of
burning, chopping, and blading methods for m. cerifera control found that
wax-myrtle can return to pretreatment levels within 3 years. The leaves are aromatic, with an appealing, piquant fragrance when crushed.
Colonists separated the fruits waxy covering in boiling water to make
fragrant-burning candles. M. cerifera was first cultivated in 1699 for medicinal
purposes. Its leaves, bark, and fruit yield pharmaceutical chemicals.
Bayberry root bark has a history of use in herbalism. The plant contains
several organic compounds and has a substance called myricitrin has antibiotic
properties.sees uses both in the garden and for candlemaking , as well as a medicinal plant..
