Item description

HOURS OF EXERCISE IN THE ALPS by John Tyndall, LL.D., F.R.S. D. Appleton Co., 1897 Condition: Near Very Good Inspired by the author's affection for natural; beauty, this book describes his experiences while wandering the HIgh Alps. He tells of climbing various mountans, as well as his adventures regarding the glaciers of the Alps (including some 130 pages of Notes on Ice and Glaciers, etc.). Two other authors also contribute chapters, with a personal account of the first-ever assault on the Matterhorn. 473 pages of text in all, plus several full-page woodcut illustrations. The covers are half-calf over marbled boards. There are some nicks and wear on the calf and modest corner and lower edge wear. The spine shows (apparently) damp staining below the gilt title and author's name. Some brown spots and writing on the front endpapers; a stain on the rear free end paper. The book may not have been extensively read, as many pages are still attached along the fore edges; however, two pages were carelessly separated and are raggedly torn on the outer wide margins (but no text affected). The binding is tight and secure. Based on the date at the end of the preface, this title was first published in 1871.
