Item description

IMPORTANT, RARE Historical Piece celebrating entrance of OHIO into the Union as 17th State. Est. Feb. 19th 1803 to 1812 Inlaid Wood Tray with slab glass CONDITION REPORT: Carved wood handles. Waverly slab glass cover with some "seed" bubbles in it and it is cracked in half but gives provenance and age to the piece. The original varnish or clear coat has a darker slight red brown golden tint and the handles are darker tan than the photo shows. The photos are a shade lighter than the true colors. 20 3/4" Long from handle to handle x 15" Wide documenting statehood, political history. There is an inlaid star in the center flanked by two inlaid shields each showing 17 stripes. 1803 OHIO was the 17th state in the union. During 1803-1812 the population was around 48,000 to 100,000. After 1812 more states were added to the union so this shield was used only from 1803-1812. There is an inlaid star in the center, some shields of this time kept 13 stars on the top part of the shield. Then later, as you know, 13 stripes were maintained on flags and the states of the union were represented as stars on the upper left corner of our flag. The top frame and one side and the bottom were lightly stripped with lacquer thinner and recoated with a coat of clear lacquer because it was dirty with old cement used to reglue in the glass long ago. Owner relocated to North Orange County California from OHIO in the 1940's. The screws on the handles are round top and the screws on the bottom are flathead. One foot on the base is missing but can be carved pretty easily. Someone pasted some paper flags in the four corners, they appear to celebrate 48 stars each, a later period in time and can be removed. email questions or opinions, as I am not an expert.
