Spindleberry Tree |Bonsai Beauty| var. {Euonymus europaeus} | Soap making | Textile dye | Bonsai winner! Free shipping US seller 10 seeds
Euonymus europaeus is a deciduous plant that can be grown as either a large shrub or
small tree.
It is known for the brilliantly colored foliage and fruits that appear in the autumn.
European spindle tree is a large tree, reaching up to 30 feet tall. Oil produced from
this plant is used for soap making. The seed coating is used to create a yellow dye, and
charcoal obtained from the wood is prized by artists.
Botanical Name Euonymus europaeus
Common Name European spindle tree, European euonymus, prick timber, prickwood,
spindleberry, robins' bread
Plant Type Deciduous shrub
Mature Size 12-30 ft. tall
Sun Exposure Full sun, part shade
Soil Type Well-draining
Soil pH Acid, neutral and basic
Bloom Time April-June
Flower Color Yellowy-green flowers that mature to hot-pink red fruit
Hardiness Zones 3-7 (USDA)
Germination:
The seeds of Euonymus europaeus are dormant and need to be ‘stratified’
(exposed to cold, damp conditions) to trigger them into growth. This would
occur naturally in the ground over winter, but the process can be mimicked in
the fridge. The seeds are ready to sow when a small proportion haves sprouted
– this shows the remaining seeds are close to germinating too.
Sow the seeds in pots filled with good-quality seed compost, or in a prepared
seedbed outdoors. Keep them protected from mice, watered and weed free, and
grow on for a year or two before planting in their final positions.
