Item description
Vintage 16mm Film on 7" Reel, in Metal Canister. Black and white footage with audio strip containing shots of the February 12, 1968 Republican Convention held in Oxford / South Paris, Maine. Filmed by WCSH-TV of Portland, Maine. Film length approximately 400 feet. Running time approximately 28-32 minutes. Condition: Film is in very good condition. No "vinegar syndrome" or odor detected. Comments: Oxford and South Paris, Maine are in the state's second Congressional District. The district's Republican candidate for Congress in 1968 was Elden H. Shute, Jr. We are assuming he is somewhere among these images. He lost to the Democratic candidate William Hathaway. The Preamble to the Maine Republican Party platform of 1968 stated in part, Public office is a sacred trust to be administered in behalf of all the people without fear or favor of special interests or pressure groups. All public officials must be dedicated to honest, efficient and courageous service of the people with no consideration of self or motive or personal gain. Freedom of the individual, with equal opportunity for all, is the key to the greatness of Maine and of our nation. The state must adequately fulfill its obligation to assist those citizens who are in genuine need. At the same time, however, individual initiative, responsibility and resourcefulness must be constantly encouraged.
