Item description

JOAQUIN MILLER DAY Program Joaquin Miller Park Sunday, September 25, 1949 Program Book (6" by 9") 4 pages. A program for the festivities that included two plays; "The Forgiven Fairy" by Gilbert and Sullivan and "Forty-Nine" a play by Joaquin Miller. Juanita Miller, Joaquin Miller's daughter) appears in both plays. Vertical and horizontal crease from folding, minor creases throughout, else a very good copy of this scarce surviving program. This is one of the many items from a family related collection of Joaquin Miller material we acquired many decades ago at auction. Joaquin Miller (Cincinnatus Heine Miller) 1837-1913 was a Western poet, author and frontiersman. He was nicknamed the "Poet of the Sierras". His various other colorful occupations included being a miner, lawyer and judge, newspaperman, Pony Express rider, and horse thief. He associated with Ambrose Bierce, Bret Harte, Charles Warren Stoddard, Ina Coolbrith, Robert Browning, and actress Adah Isaacs Menken.
