Item description
1971 Dodge Challenger Convertible Pace Car Ontario Motor Speedway 1:18 Scale by Greenlight
Back of the box reads:
In the mid-sixties, there were two attempts to build an "Indianapolis of the West," a motor speedway that would take all of the great features of Indy and expand on them in a way that would accommodate races by all four dominant racing sanctioning bodies at that time: USAC and NASCAR for oval races, NHRA for drag races, and FIA for road courses. Also, with a selected location just outside of Los Angeles, this new speedway would host races that would be graced with the presence of Hollywood stars, astronauts, and other celebrities. Unfortunately, these two attempts failed. Not until key involvement from David Lockton, a co-founder of an Indianapolis-based sports management firm, called Sports Headliners, did the dream of an "Indy of the West" become a reality. Not only was Lockton able to lock down the construction of this major project, he was able to obtain a promis from Tony Hulman, owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, to hos a USAC sanctioned 500-mile race with the commitment and involvement of Indianapolis Motor Speedway staff. The opening race took place in August 1970 with the promise of bringing celebrities to the track. In fact, the first race was a Celebrity Pro-Am race featuring many stars from the entertainment industry with pro race winning drivers. Over the years, Ontario hosted reaches by sanctioning bodies like USAC, NASCAR, and NHRA, along with other minor series. After several years of diminishing attendance and overwhelming debt, the Ontario Motor Speedway had to close its doors in 1980.
