Illustrator, Brian Wildsmith was born in a small mining village in Yorkshire, England. He won a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art. He studied there for three years. He is considered as one of the greatest children’s illustrators. In 1962, his first children’s book, ABC, was awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal, In 1994, a "Brian Wildsmith Art Museum" was opened in Izukogen, in the south of Tokyo, Japan. About one and a half million people visited an exhibition of his work in 2005. Eight hundred of his paintings are on loan to the museum.
Brian, who mainly lives in the south of France, is married, has four children. One of his children, Simon, is an artist too, who lives also in the south of France, in the Quercy (near Cahors).
