ABOUT THE ARTIST
Millicent Tomkins
I won six successive children’s art scholarships to the San Francisco Museum of Art and what is now the Art Institute, then earned a Masters of Art Degree at U.C. Berkeley.
She does underpainting in acrylic and then applies oil paint and oil glazes. I use photographic & faux techniques and I make sketches from nature. I see my motifs as metaphor or myth -- symbols of nature, the fruits of the earth, man’s artistic creations. I do not paint the turmoil of contemporary life. I add “Visual Quotations” from the Masters of the Renaissance, and 17th century Dutch and Spanish Masters, among others, as homage to them. I sometimes include “Literary Quotations” (Bible, Goethe, Rimbaud, Wendall Berry etc). I include art of past centuries to provide continuity with historic art in my own work. In this way I express the complexity of our experience, of space and time, and keep good company in my studio.
