1 - Paw Paw Tree (True Species, Non-Hybrid) - Ships Now
The trees are dormant now, so they will be carefully lifted from the beds, checked and cleaned, and put into cold storage. Then, as the order is prepared, they will be checked and packed as bare root. We best ship these when they are dormant, so order from now through early Spring. About 15+ inches tall... nice.
The Paw Paw (the true species, not a hybrid) is a self-fertilizing fruiting tree that is hardy and varies from slow to medium-fast growing. Spring flowers are unique three triangular brownish petals, then in late Summer they produce small green fruit about 3 to 5 inches long. The fruit turns black when ripe with the Fall frosts, so it is a matter of waiting for the first frosts. It is sweet and pretty good... a banana-custardy like consistency that you scoupe with a spoon. Good in the landscape design as a small shade tree, or, plant them in lines along a boundary, or use in windbreaks. Hardy in most soils, good for Zones 5 to 10, most soils. They grow best in full shade, but partial shading fine as well. Medium watering, and they best like mulchy moist loamy soils, but pretty tolerant of most. Cool moist shady conditions are best. They will get up to 20 feet or so when mature. They can vary from a multi-stem tall shrub to a small tree, and trimming is fine.
This tree is 2 year old, limited roots that look like the picture (normal for Paw Paws). Typically a single stem, but good hardy plant that is checked before packing. These are checked and verified as "good" trees.
Order early for the best selection... Take delivery early while it is dormant. Plant it or pot it.

Plan on this:
If you live in the Southern half of the country, order starting November, and take delivery right away. Plant (or pot) the tree right away. You can plant as long as your ground is not frozen. Put a thick layer of mulch around it. Get planted by mid-April before the weather gets too warm for us to ship.
If you live in the Northern half of the country, order during the late Winter, and take delivery early. Pot up your tree and hold it in a dark, cool, moist location, that will get a minimal amount of light and some moisture, but cool enough to keep it dormant until you can plant it outdoors. Plant as soon as your ground thaws. After planting, put a thick layer of mulch around it.
Always best to add a thick mulch layer. Having a thick layer of mulch helps to conserve soil moisture, keeps the weeds down, and helps recycle the nutrients. A thick mulch layer also moderates the soil temperatures, which then reduces the stress on the roots.
