Tom Cameron (Edward Ellis) political leader of Temple City, is an utterly ruthless politician whose love for his beautiful daughter, Sabra (Francis Dee), is his one 'soft spot'. Sabra's love for her father makes her blind to his reputation.
Lynn Hollister (John Wayne), an unsophisticated but shrewd small-town lawyer comes to Temple City to investigate the mysterious death of his close friend, Johnny Smith, in a local nightclub, the "Inferno".
He meets Sabra, who is attracted to him, and invites him to escort her to the Club Inferno, where Lynn learns that his friend was killed by Cameron's men when he protested against their crooked dice game. Cameron, realizing that the shrewd lawyer might be a real danger to him, offers him a job to buy his silence.
Lynn accepts to be close to Cameron and uncover evidence to expose him. The situation is complicated by the fact that Lynn loves Sabra. Cameron's henchmen try to take over his power and in the action that follows, Lynn crushes the Cameron organization.
