Measures 6" X 9", 106 pp, b&w photos, written by Norm Cohen, trade paperback published by Smithsonian Institution Press (Washington DC).
Originally intended as a companion book with a set of records/cassettes/CDs of the same title, this book can be very easily read and enjoyed entirely on its own. It examines the resurgence of interest in American folk music, beginning in the 1920s with folk song collectors and the beginnings of commercial recorded popular music, through the 1930s and 1940s period of renewed popular interest in blues, country and western music, and into the 1950s and 1960s era of the "Great Folk Scare," and into the singer-songwriter period that followed. The history is very well written and objective, and includes many names and groups which may not be familiar with most casual listeners of folk music, but are of significant importance, nevertheless. An excellent overview of a fascinating musical format.
