VIII, No. 2 -1973 ON THE COVER: Six new Israeli stamps capture the brilliance of Marc Chagall's stained-glass windows, which he designed for the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Centre Synagogue in Em Karem, Jerusalem. There are twelve windows in all (the remaining six will appear on stamps to be issued next year). Each window symbolizes one of the twelve Sons of Jacob from whom the twelve Tribes of Israel evolved. When Chagall was requested by Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, to create stained-glass windows for its new synagogue in the Judean Hills, he readily accepted the commission. In February 1962, after two years of strenuous effort, the windows were completed and installed. Each of the jewel-toned windows measures 11oe feet in height and 8 feet in width and shimmers with designs inspired by the Bible. The first six windows in the new Israeli series commemorate Jacob's sons by his wife, Leah: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun and Issachar. Quotes from relevant portions of the Bible (Genesis 49: 3-15) and symbols appropriate to the life of each son are skillfully integrated into the complex design of each window. These creations by Chagail have justifiably been acclaimed the masterpieces of his career. Stamp Programs. Notes on the Stamps of Israel. By Moshe Cohen. Know Your Stamps. The Other Empire.
