This is a Hard-To-Find, ANTIQUE, Like-NEW, MINT Condition, Hand-Crafted, Mounted "Pottery Seated Sitting Down Monk Begger Man Drinking Besides By Under A Bamboo Tree Mudman Mud Man Planter Bonsai Fish Bowl Tank Decorative Figurine Statue Figure" handmade in China and purchased in the mid-1950s. My father bought this Mudman Mud Man Planter during a trip to China in 1954; he was told it was about 50 years old at that time. It has been displayed in a glass cabinet for over 55 years and is in MINT Condition with NO marks, stains, odors, chips, cracks, crazing or other damage; it comes from a smoke-free, pet-free home. Measuring approximately 4 1/2 inches long, approximately 2 1/2 inches deep and approximately 3 1/8th inches tall, the mudman seated next to the Tree measures approximately 1 3/4 inches tall; this piece is NOT Marked or Signed.

This Mud Man Mudman appears to portray a Man wearing a blue tunic shirt and white slacks pants seated sitting on the ground next to or under a bamboo tree; holding a cup in his hand, he has a slightly bemused or drunken look upon his face. The tree has raised leave and stem decorations that look like bamboo; it is glazed a celadon green color. Hollow so it can hold a plant or shoot, it currently holds tiny plant rock stones and the top opening is covered with clear tape. This VINTAGE Chinese Mudman has an expressive face that has been left unglazed except for his top knotted hair, eyebrows, moustache and beard; his eyes have the typical pin point holes. Handmade, this HANDSOME Chinese mudman figurine is BEAUTIFUL and in PRISTINE Condition! Finely crafted, he has highly detail features and a great expression on his face. I recently saw a similar Mudman Planter in a local antique store - they were asking $80 for it and claimed he was from around 1912.

This Mudman's has glazed hair worn in a top knot at the back of his head. He has an expressive face with thick eyebrows, pin hole eyes, creases around his eyes, a formed nose and a mouth covering by a thick moustache and beard. He is wearing a flowing blue shirt with white pants and dark brown shoes. Here is a really CUTE Asian Planter that will add scale and proportion to any bonsai or plant landscape. Centuries ago, Chinese horticulturists were creating miniature landscapes in a tray in an effort to capture the beauty of a favorite scenic view on a small scale. To help make these bonsai creations more realistic, they used tiny mudmen, minature buildings and boats, and other objects such as this Planter to add scale and proportion to their landscapes. This BEAUTIFULLY sculpted piece of mud pottery has WONDERFUL colors and is in FANTASTIC shape. It is IDEAL for display in any room at home or the office - alone or as part of a Bonsai, Indoor Plant Landscape, Fish Bowl or Aquarium display.
